Job Description

Overview The Behavioral Health Education Specialist provides direct patient care by developing rapport with patients, facilitating patient/caregiver safety, gathering critical data to inform the treatment team in the development of the treatment and education plan of care, and implementing interventions as recommended by the multi-disciplinary treatment team. This role includes providing individual, supportive contacts to patients that focus on validating negative feelings, offering coping strategies, building self-esteem, developing skills, and initial assessment of immediate risk to self and others. Responsibilities Maintain a safe, consistent, and supportive environment by collaborating with and communicating to the multidisciplinary treatment team and providing culturally sensitive care in accordance with the care plan. Assist with planning, instruction, and facilitation in all areas of educational programming; will facilitate classroom programming in the absence of the primary teacher. Assist Educational Mental Health Specialist and Special Education teacher in creating and implementing group content including educational activities, goal setting, relaxation, skill building, and psycho-educational activities as dictated by skill level. Work with physically and verbally aggressive patients; maintain a calm demeanor while engaging with patients exhibiting negative or maladaptive behaviors. Utilize Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) techniques to reduce stress and maintain safety. Anticipate and diffuse patient behaviors that could lead to unsafe situations; respond calmly and with a team-based approach; seek assistance as needed. Determine when higher-level interventions are needed and safely initiate physical restraints per TCI guidelines; mentor new Mental Health Workers on crisis interventions. Record and document patient care interventions, observations, and group/educational interactions in the Electronic Medical Record accurately. Float to other classrooms or departments (within scope and qualifications) based on business needs; satisfy all organizational requirements and perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum: Four or more years of demonstrated experience in Behavioral Health, Special Education, or Early Childhood Education. Demonstrated experience in de-escalating negative behaviors and creating safe environments. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Proficiency with computer applications. Valid driver's license, a DMV record in good standing, and current auto insurance. Basic Life Support (BLS) and First Aid certification within 90 days of employment. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, sociology, family studies, or a related field (education field-specific verification). Ability to obtain Colorado Department of Education substitute license within 6 months of hire. Bi-lingual in Spanish. Physical Requirements Ongoing need to read information, labels, documents, and monitor equipment; assess customer needs. Frequent verbal communication with providers, colleagues, customers, patients/clients, and visitors; ability to hear and understand information quickly and accurately. Manual dexterity to manipulate supplies and equipment; frequent computer use. For roles requiring driving: ability to drive a vehicle, sit, see and read signs, signals, and other vehicles. Ability to regularly lift and move up to 50 pounds. Ability to use crisis prevention/intervention techniques including physical management of a child and responding to runaway incidents; physical stamina to stand, walk, sit, reach, climb/balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, run or crawl as needed.
