The Medication Safety Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and administering the medication safety program for the facility as well as assisting with medication safety, medication policy, and education as assigned for the system. Coordinates performance improvement and risk management related to medication use safety. Influences practice changes to align pharmacy services with national initiatives. A Brief Overview
The Medication Safety Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and administering the medication safety program for the facility as well as assisting with medication safety, medication policy, and education as assigned for the system. Coordinates performance improvement and risk management related to medication use safety. Influences practice changes to align pharmacy services with national initiatives. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

What you will do

Formulates policy and implements actions to promote medication safety and ensure standardized practices.

  • Reviews all reported medication safety events.
  • Maintains regulatory compliance with code blue carts and temperature monitoring.
  • Evaluates BCMA, automated dispensing cabinet l overrides, order alert overrides, drug-drug interactions, and dose range checking alerts.

Assists Medication Safety Officer in system-wide development and administration of the medication safety program.

  • Assists with drug shortages with management team.
  • Conducts medication use evaluations with clinical manager.
  • Improves adverse drug reaction reporting (internally and nationally).
  • Helps with pump library maintenance and compliance.

Conducts educational programs, activities, and pharmacy system updates including:

  • Provides necessary medication safety training and competencies for pharmacists and technicians.
  • Provides hazardous medications training and competencies for pharmacists and technicians.
  • Manages medications with REMS and required hospital compliance.
  • Serves as a preceptor for pharmacy residents.
  • Coordinates student activities as assigned.
  • Performs other job functions as assigned or requested.


Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Pharmacy
  • Doctorate Pharmacy

Experience Qualifications

  • No prior work experience
  • Experience in Drug Information or Medication Safety preferred.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of regulatory and reporting requirements as well as knowledge of and expertise with all aspects of the medications-use system, including procurement, prescribing, transcribing, preparation, distribution, administration, documentation, and monitoring of drugs.
  • Knowledge of general principles of medication use safety, theory, medication error reporting systems (ISMP and MedWatch), performance improvement and risk management.
  • Proficient computer skills for developing analysis tools and reports (i.e. root cause analysis, process-flow mapping, medication use reports).

  • Pharmacist Tennessee - Tennessee Board of Pharmacy
  • Pharmacist Mississippi - Mississippi Board of Pharmacy

  • There are no supervisory responsibilities assigned to this job.

Physical Demands

  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: light work - exerting up to 25 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity, such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • The conditions to which the Associate will be subject in this position: The Associate is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions; job functions are typically performed under conditions such as those found in general office or administrative work.
