All persons hired into Limited Term (LT) positions will be required to sign a term of employment letter specifying conditions of employment. Hours of Work: 5/8s, Thursday-Monday, 6am-2:30pm. Job Responsibilities The ideal candidate for this position will have at least one year of experience working with and maintaining native or desert‑adapted landscapes. Demonstrate the ability to perform a range of unskilled and semi‑skilled duties and is motivated to advance their career within the green industry. The candidate thrives in team settings, communicates routine and accurate updates regarding work processes, especially during and after opening procedures, and works effectively in an interactive environment. Be adaptable, and able to step away from regular duties to assist with emergency tasks as needed, and comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions. Additionally, they should be skilled in operating assigned utility carts and trucks, with the potential to earn certifications for motorized equipment operation. The human resources staff will screen applications and supplemental questionnaires. Candidates possessing the strongest skills and experience for this position will be forwarded to the hiring department for further evaluation and to determine who will be invited to the formal interview process. The candidate hired will be required to pass a drug screening, background check and may be required to pass a job‑related physical evaluation. General Purpose Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of unskilled, semi‑skilled, skilled and specialized duties involved in the horticulture, greenhouse, landscaping, cultivation, maintenance, and operations of the Las Vegas Springs Preserve; installs, repairs and maintains irrigation systems for landscaped areas; maintains the appearance of Preserve grounds and facilities; participates in water conservation education and public awareness programs; provides horticultural assistance to Preserve staff and visitors and assists with native plant propagation, salvage programs and native seed repository; as a Lead, provides work guidance and direction to other Preserve Gardens Workers and serves as a point person for gardens projects in areas of expertise; and performs related duties as assigned. Desired Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of Mojave native flora, drought‑tolerant plants, trees, cacti, shrubs, vines, hedges and ground cover for the Southwest; specialized nutrient and cultural requirements of plants in an extreme desert environment; methods and techniques of potting, seeding, planting, transplanting, cultivating, pruning and maintaining a variety of Mojave native and drought tolerant lawns, ground cover, plants, shrubs, hedges, cacti and trees, with a particular focus on drought‑resistant stock; basic methods for plant salvaging and seed collection and processing; seasonal plant water use requirements for an extensive variety of drought tolerant plant species; soil preparation and enrichment in an extreme desert environment; methods, techniques, practices, equipment and chemicals used in weed and insect control and treating plant diseases; basic greenhouse operations and facility maintenance; installation, maintenance and repair of high‑efficiency irrigation systems; basic methods and techniques of landscape design in an extreme desert environment; basic plumbing, mechanical and electrical maintenance and repairs; use and maintenance of commonly used hand and power landscaping tools and equipment; shop mathematics; safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work; standard principles and practices of effective employee lead supervision, including training and work evaluation. Ability to Use landscaping tools and equipment; safely operate a variety of power and motorized equipment and vehicles; recognize and identify plants, trees, shrubs, groundcover, cacti and other horticultural specimens; recognize, diagnose and treat plant disorders, diseases and insect pests; analyze landscaping problems, evaluate alternatives and recommend or adopt effective courses of action; prepare clear and concise records, reports and other written materials; read and interpret landscaping and irrigation system blueprints, sketches, drawings and specifications; represent the Preserve effectively in interacting with individual visitors and visiting groups, answering technical landscape questions and providing instruction on a variety of landscaping, cultivation and irrigation topics; follow oral and written instructions; exercise independent judgment and initiative within established guidelines; meet objectives in coordination with other staff members and the plant collections committee; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work, including the public. Training and Experience Preserve Gardens Worker I: Some experience in gardening or landscape maintenance. Preserve Gardens Worker II: Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent, supplemented by considerable coursework and training in horticulture, landscaping and gardening requirements of an extreme desert environment; and one year of groundskeeping experience, including the propagation, cultivation and care of a wide variety of drought tolerant plants, trees, shrubs and groundcover; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Preserve Lead Gardens Worker: Graduation from high school, or G.E.D. equivalent, supplemented by considerable coursework and training in horticulture, landscaping and gardening requirements of an extreme desert environment; and five years of journey‑level experience in landscaping and gardening in an extreme desert environment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements A valid Nevada driver’s license may be required for some positions and the ability to maintain insurability under the Water District Vehicle Insurance Policy.
